JOHANNES HONTERUS HIGH SCHOOL in BRASOV

Restoration, 2004-2007

The building of the Johannes Honterus High School is a representative architectural presence of Brasov, with a special historical, archeological and architectural value. Located in the heart of the city, in the immediate vicinity of the Black Church and the Council Square, the building has a history of about 800 years, knowing several stages of construction.

The current shape of the building, a historical monument, dates from the end of the 18th century, when the House of Preachers was built, using the foundations of a construction from the middle of the 16th century. In 1856, modernization works were carried out, building a new floor and practicing on the main facade the two entrances that flank the central gangway.

The project was carried out between 2004 an 2007 and consisted in functional improvements, structural strengthening and restoration of the monument. The original materials and technologies were used as much as possible.

The basements of the building preserve the vestiges of St. Catherine's Chapel, one of the oldest buildings of the medieval fortress of Brasov, built around 1250, with the first buildings on the north side of the Council Square, before the parish church. They still house important archaeological remains and the interventions on this part of the building were done with archaeological assistance.
